Building a Family Legacy with Storytelling

Storytelling is the conveying of events in words and images, often by improvisation. Stories have been shared in every culture as a means of education, entertainment, cultural preservation and instilling moral values. Crucial elements of stories and storytelling include plot, characters and a narrative point of view.

They predate writing, but now, with so many forms of constantly evolving media, storytelling has extended itself to representing history, personal narrative, political commentary, and evolving cultural norms.

Building a family legacy includes anything handed down from the past, as from an ancestor or predecessor. FamilyArc is dedicated to helping you preserve that legacy for generations to come. Many of us recall stories our parents or grandparents told around the dinner table. Perhaps it was the account of how they immigrated from Romania or somewhere else that may not be instantly familiar to us. The stories they told of hardship where they lived and how they decided to seek a better life give us inspiration to also improve our lives, even if the challenges we face now are vastly different from immigrating to a new world and language many decades ago. Preserving that legacy is vital to understanding where we came from. Your family tree is also part of your legacy.

While a legacy of money from a deceased relative is important, perhaps the legacy of the values and the beliefs of that person are even more important.

Capturing those stories is so much easier now with all the forms of communication we have; they can be written, or audio or video recordings. Or maybe it’s something else that can be digitized in the future. Picture a recorded family gathering that captures a number of stories from our memories. While it is useful to know that Grandpa worked for the railroad for 40 years, it’s more important to know how he felt about his work, what he felt he contributed to his family and society by doing so, and what he might have changed if he had had the opportunity.

Stories will fade and disappear if not captured, and FamilyArc’s secure digital platform is the ideal place to store them. We are ready to help with this if you wish. Contact us to get started today!
