Golf with Dad: Best West Coast Golf Courses to Visit in the US

If golf is how you bond with Dad, take him out for the experience of a lifetime on one of the best west coast golf courses in the US. Check out these West Coast gems for wind-swept sand dunes and breathtaking ocean views you won’t forget.

Pacific Northwest

Pacific Dunes: Bandon, OR

Pacific Dunes is one of five links courses at the Bandon Resort, and it’s described as feeling as if it were discovered, not built. The course ranked No. 2 on Golf Digest’s “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses” list this year, and it makes use of large sand dunes and the natural landscape. Combine that with the wind off the ocean, and this course will be sure to test your skills.

Chambers Bay: University Place, WA

One of the top public courses in Washington, Chambers Bay is hosting the 2015 U.S. Open, and it’s the first Pacific Northwest course in history to do so. Chambers Bay is a walking-only links course on the Puget Sound with water views from every hole.

California

Pebble Beach: Pebble Beach, CA

Home to five U.S. Opens and host to many famous visitors such as Clint Eastwood, Teddy Roosevelt, and Bing Crosby, Pebble Beach is a legendary course to visit. It has been Golf Digest’s No. 1 public course pick every year since they started the list in 2003, and its breathtaking course includes nine holes directly overlooking the Pacific surf.

Pacific Grove Golf Links: Pacific Grove, CA

If Pebble Beach is a little steep in price for you and Dad, try out Pacific Grove Golf Links for less than $50 for 18 holes. It offers fairways lined with Cypress trees, beautiful sand dunes, and magnificent ocean views. The back nine was designed by Jack Neville of Pebble Beach, which explains why the course is often referred to as the “Poor Man’s Pebble Beach.”

Coronado Golf Course: San Diego, CA

This is a great stop for you and Dad while touring the West Coast. Coronado opened in 1957 near downtown San Diego. It’s located on the water under the Coronado Bridge and offers views of downtown and sailboats. You can’t beat San Diego temperatures, and the price isn’t bad either—starting at only $35 without a cart.

Sea Ranch, California: Sea Ranch, CA

The Sea Ranch Golf Links may seem out in the middle of nowhere, located on historic U.S. Highway 1 in Northern California. But this gem offers Scottish links-style architecture plus beautiful views of the redwoods and the coast at a fraction of the cost of the renowned Pebbles Beach.
